We here at Up All Hours know only too well what a struggle the night can be with a child. Whether you are up feeding, dealing with a wet bed, or waiting with baited breath to see what time your teenager staggers through the door – one thing’s for sure sleep as a parent is in short supply.

However, even we, were surprised at the latest research from The Book Trust, that shows that as a new parent you lose out on over 650 hours of sleep a year! That is 27 days people!!! No wonder as new parents we struggle to function!
The survey of 1,000 parents also found that 21% of new parents have taken a day off work due to the effects of sleep depravation meaning that our children’s sleep habits not only dictate our lives but also effect our work too.
So with this in mind the Book Trust are promoting the benefits of a Bath, Book, Bed routine which has been proven to help aid success in getting children to adopt good sleeping habits and in turn, provide their parents with some much needed extra sleep too!
Parenting expert, Jo Frost, says: “Book Trust’s Bath, Book, Bed campaign is a really straightforward approach to tackling a problem that most parents with young children face – the bedtime battle. Bedtime routines do not need to be complicated for especially-tired parents on their last legs. Implementing healthy sleeping habits, and a consistent bedtime routine will not only calm down the child and parents but, provide an environment so that both child and parent can read together helping them both relax and wind down. Meaning everyone will be well-rested, happier and healthier.”

The Boo kTrust is the UK’s largest children’s reading charity. Thwy work to inspire a love of reading in children because (and we agree) reading can transform lives.
Each year The Book Trust reaches 2.5 million children across the UK with books, resources and support to help develop a love of reading. Every parent receives a BookTrust book in the baby’s first year. Our books are delivered via health, library, schools and early year’s practitioners, and are supported with guidance, advice and resources to encourage the reading habit. Reading for pleasure has a dramatic impact on educational outcomes, well-being and social mobility, and is also a huge pleasure in itself.
